Harry Potter and the Wizard World
   


Harry PotterHere a quite strange phenomenon. 20 million specimens sold all over the world, in 18 months, for the first book of an unknown author. And more still in the youth category - children.

Why such a success?
Which differences with other works?
Which is the secrecy?
Many questions emerge for which is interested in the world of the children. a momentary fashion?
Honestly, I do not believe. One did not finish intending to speak about Harry Potter.

I thus plunged myself in this particular universe to try to discover some of the strings of this success without precedent. I thus divide you my reflexions, humbly, knowing that I do not have infused science and that my glance can light only some facets of this quasi-universal success.

I will divide my appreciations into 4 shutters: history, aspects psychological, morals, spirituality. Good reading! Just still a note:: they are my appreciations here on the first volume "Harry Potter and the wizard world".

 

The STORY

Amateur of fantastic accounts of adventures, I was filled. Here is a history which holds the road well. One day was enough for me to devour the 300 pages of this volume.
The rhythm is supported, well maintained suspense, much of action, in a limited space, the school, and a time also limited to him, one school year. Quickly the reader is put in the bath and the party for Harry Potter is quickly taken.
The stakes are quickly shown, Harry Potter is in danger, a death threat weighs on him. Will it be able to thwart it?

The universe of the child is respected strictly, mainly in the first part. Harry Potter lives in parents of adoption, his uncle and his aunt, it must go to the school, has duties to make. It is not a child with a life of adult.
Even in the second part, the school of Poudlard, the reader keeps the feeling to have to make a child, who must remain subjected to Profs...

Curiously, on the end of the book, a pause is essential, one finds this world of childhood the world of normality... I had to retain me not to jump at once on the reading of following volume (that will come).

Suspense is learnedly maintained by the various forces brought into play. It is not a question to overcome the natural forces which attack Robinson Crusoé, nor the moral fibres which break out in the fight of the good against the evil.
With Harry Potter, the reader is confronted with occult forces, hidden, secret, which escape from its operation from rational thoughts. This reflexion opens the following shutter

 

PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS

Why Harry Potter is it if attaching? In all cases for me! I see 2 important psychological aspects: identification and introjection.

The identification is the process which enables me to be put in the skin of a character. Elements which seem me to support the identification:

 

  • Harry Potter is an orphan,
  • It is maltreated by its family of reception,
  • Rejected its pars,
  • It has an ungrateful physique,
  • It is always victim,
  • It undergoes a number of injustices without being able to defend oneself,
  • It is a recluse, misunderstood (moldus)...

It has very to fail, to be a least that nothing. No past, not of future, one very dark present... All is there so that the reader is identified in Harry Potter. Each one can find in its own history a feature which brings it closer Harry Potter. There is of each one of us a form of dissatisfaction which enables us to be identified with this child and to take it in friendship. It is thirsty for identity, acceptance, listening, justice. It wants a future, but does not have any possible exit. Who can say: "isn't that, it for me?"

I believe that the force of the author is to make like Harry Potter by the reader, as of the first chapter. One takes cause for him, one needs that it was left there, that cannot last. Once that the reader bit with this hook, it wants to go until the end. (From where my fights to await the reading of the 2° volume). Harry Potter, it is a little me... When the reader arrives from there at this conclusion, it will probably read the 6 remaining volumes.

Introjection it is my unconscious desire to become like the different one, to try to become the different one. Elements which in my opinion support this process:

    • friendship for the weak ones.
    • setting with share.
    • elected official
    • the weak one can become strong
    • feeling of invulnerability

The magic offers to Harry Potter a future. Ouf! There is hope. There will not remain victim. It can finally become author, by the power of the magic. The message is clear: if Harry Potter studies well sorcery it will not be more the runt, victim of the circumstances, but indeed the actor of his life. Who doesn't dream to change statutes? To become actor rather than victim? To be the director of his own life? The reader wants to become Harry Potter, it thus will follow it in his training to the school of Poudlard.

There he seems me to see the basic elements of an initiatory course ; Harry Potter does not know its origins. In a fantastic way, it is discovered a blood of wizard, and who more is, famous. The doors of the school are opened to him, and in 7 degrees, 7 stages, 7 school years, it will learn how to manage the received gifts of his late parents. With with each stage of the examinations, and always the possibility of being excluded from the school if a serious fault is made. With Harry Potter, the reader initiates himself with the art of sorcery. And for Harry Potter, it is the only means which arises at him to leave the horror of its daily newspaper.

There is of each one of us, the desire to be somebody of better. If the process of identification functioned, the reader is ripe for introjection. It will wish to succeed like Harry Potter. It will dream or wish to be also an elected official, one put aside...

But all is not gained yet. The author introduces elements which maintain suspense and thus reinforce the identification and introjection

 

  • Harry Potter is the target of mysterious powers.
  • It is the involuntary stake of forces which it does not control.
  • It is unaware of very its origins
  • It is marked "sign".

These unverifiable elements, completely independent of the will of Harry Potter, show its brittleness. It needs the magic to overcome, it is right thus to learn it, and the reader is right also to like it...

Personally I think that it is this psychological shutter which makes the success of Harry Potter. Lastly, in the daily greyness, it is possible to be left there! A means given to the initiates, and alone.

 

MORALS

Here, each one will put at it what he will want. It is the sociocultural aspect of the history. Each one reacts according to its own heritage. For my part, carrying a culture Judeo-Christian, the moral aspect of Harry Potter is far from what I wish to leave to my children like heritage. Here some aspects which I located:

  • are developed: heroism, bravery, temerity, courage, intelligence, individualism, rancour, revenge.
  • all the means are good to reach the desired results (to lie, handling of its entourage)
  • enfreindre the payments can have positive consequences or to disobey can not have negative consequences...
  • a form of social racism is developed vis-a-vis with the "moldus", the uninitiated persons, the weak ones, the ignoramuses.
  • there are no absolutes, there is place for the malignant ones, the crafty beggars, the conceited ones, the underhand ones, the perfidious ones (Serpentard).
  • there is no place for the free sacrifice, the truth , forgiveness.

The words of Quirrell summarize in a clear way the line of thought of the author (284):

"I was a stupid young man, at the time, full with ridiculous ideas on the concepts of good and evil. Lord Voldemort showed me at which point I was wrong. There N is no good nor of evil, there is only the capacity, and those which are too weak to seek it...

THE SPIRITUALITE

With Harry Potter, I see only one shutter of spirituality Judeo-Christian. Only one aspect is presented, that of the world of the spirits. The spirits exist, it is a reality underlined by the Bible. But the author presents only one aspect of it: that of the advantages brought by the occult capacities of sorcery:

 

  • the white magic is better than the black magic (74).
  • the occultism is learned, it is taught and made it possible to increase its own capacities (88)
  • these capacities can also be innate, it is enough to discover them (148).
  • the wizards, magicians, magi, enchanters, form a company with its rules, its hierarchy...
  • astrology (253), the books, the potions, the formulas make it possible to learn and exert its powers. Stores sell these books, "give" the lesson...

Some important particular aspects:

Blood is presented like having a particular capacity. Nothing to see with the value of the blood of Christ

The idea of sacrifice by blood does not miss (the mother gave its blood for its child). In one of the works of Harry Potter that Ci speaks to make a sacrifice as if it were a current thing!

The powerful one, that that fears Voldemort, Albas Dumbledore is named: "Commander of the great order of Merlin"

The bad one, since there is no evil, but a capacity to fight, is presented in the form of Voldemort, that about which one speaks while saying: You Know Who, That Which One Should not Pronounce The Name. It often inspires fear, the respect sometimes. It is a wizard, brilliance raises of Poudlard, which badly turned. It rebelled and involved in its rebellion of other wizards. They belong to the "World Of Darkness". It killed the parents of Harry Potter, one day of Halloween. The sign on the face of Harry Potter is the mark of the bad fate that it launched to him while wanting to kill it. This failure, for Voldemort, showed its disappearance of the world of the wizards, the return of the rebels and the maintenance of the mystery. (59-62). It reappears in the final chapter in a demonized form.

"You see this queje became? ... Shade and vapor... I take form only by dividing the body of somebody of other... Fortunately, they always remains about it which are ready to accomodate me in their heart and their head... When I have the elixir of life, I will be able to recreate a body which will be well with me (286) Quirrell was full with hatred, cupidity, of ambition, it shared his heart with Voldemort...

The secrecy - Ca is especially used to maintain our secrecies. It is not necessary that Moldus know that there are always magi and of the wizards from one end to another of the country. If not they would try to call upon us to solve their problems. It is preferred that they leave us quiet.

The capacities can be started by the emotions

All these strange things... had always occurred when it was furious, or under the blow of an emotion...

Titles of works and formulas magic are given to the pages (71, 108, 139, 161, 172, 181, 196, 216, 219, 227, 228, 231)

To conclude, if Harry Potter is of an interest on the plan of its history, in time that account of adventure, it does not present of it less one great danger to the children whom I wish to see growing in the faith of God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Harry Potter is not compatible with the Bible. I invite the parents seriously to inform their children, to open the dialogue, rather than to prohibit, in order to prevent that Harry Potter is read in the buddies. The description of this initiatory course presents a real spiritual danger. It is spiritually that it must be fought.

Small a DER for the reflexion: Mrs Gonagall, for Dumbledore:

"... It will become famous - a true alive legend -, I will not be astonished that the date of today becomes in the future the festival of Harry Potter. One will write books on him. All the children of the world will know his name! "

DANGER ATTENTION!

The spiritual influence that can have these books is dangerous especially at an age like adolescence where his identity is sought.

The spiritual stakes, conveyed by the adventures of Harry Potter, are dangerous. It appears difficult to to me with a child to make the share of the things. Moreover! How many adults of it are truly able and do it? The reading of these works is not alleviating. Spiritually, it should be addressed to an informed public. It is well for that that I took my feather.

The Pagan Federation of the United Kingdom receives each month between 100 and 1000 requests of people who are interested in the religious aspect of sorcery or who want to know what a young wizard must make. Many schools and teachers benefit from the passion for the reading and use these schoolbooks. Christian parents start to react, asserting that these books teach the magic and the occultism. In the USA, écoies already withdrew and prohibits this series in class. But much of schools persist in these readings by claiming that it is only one fiction.

A paragraph of this article presented the books of C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia) like a "Christian" alternative to Harry Potter. We removed this mention for two reasons: C.S. Lewis continued to have close links with the occultism and of very famous occultists (like Tolkien, Barfield and Williams) after his conversion. It is referred to occult things in these books (awakening of Gaïa in volume 1, Aslan is the name of a divinity paienne, children who take part in a "festival" with Bacchus or wine is drunk and one dances to daze oneself after having removed "superfluous" clothing in "the Prince Caspian",...). These things prevent us from continuing to recommend these books of C.S. Lewis (Opinion of information-sects on the Narnia film)
